Body fat calculator guide using the US Navy method

WeCovr's body fat calculator estimates body fat percentage using the US Navy circumference method. It is a convenient screening tool for body composition awareness, but it should not be treated as a clinical test.

What this body fat calculator measures

Unlike BMI, which uses only height and weight, this calculator uses body measurements such as waist and neck circumference to estimate body fat percentage.

It also estimates fat mass and lean mass from the percentage result and your body weight.

  • Uses the US Navy body fat formula.

  • Requires different measurements for men and women.

  • Provides body fat percentage, fat mass, and lean mass.

Why body fat percentage can be more useful than BMI alone

BMI is a useful screening tool, but it does not distinguish between fat mass and muscle mass. Body fat percentage can add helpful context when weight alone is misleading.

Important limitations

Circumference-based estimates depend on accurate measuring technique and are still only estimates. Hydration, body shape, and tape placement can all affect the output.

FAQs
Is body fat percentage better than BMI?

It can offer more context, especially for muscular people, but neither measurement tells the full story on its own.

Do I need different measurements for men and women?

Yes. The standard US Navy method uses waist and neck for men, and waist, neck, and hip for women.

How accurate is the US Navy method?

It is useful for a practical estimate, but it is less precise than clinical body composition testing.

Why might my result vary from a smart scale?

Different devices and formulas estimate body fat in different ways, so results often do not match exactly.
